Itinerari ebraici a Trieste

The monumental Synagogue in via San Francesco, one of the biggest in Europe. The ghetto streets with their antique shops. And the ancient cemetery, the Jewish Museum Carlo and Vera Wagner set in the steep via del Monte, also remembered by the poet Umberto Saba, and the Risiera of San Sabba, everlasting memory of the Nazi nightmare.
These are the main and the best known places of the Jewish itineraries in Trieste. The route that links historical and traditional aspects of local Judaism also includes less well known but just as striking halts.

>> the Riborgo ghetto in corte Trauner, where the very first ghetto had to be set;
- the Hierschel de Minerbi palace in corso Italia 9, built in 1833 by a rich merchant;
>> the Vivante House in via del Monte 4, which goes back to mid 19th century, now used as a school;
- the Morpurgo Museum in via Imbriano 5, wonderful example of late 19th century bourgeois house;
>> the Caffè San Marco, important meeting place for intellectuals and artists since the beginning of 20th century;
>> pastry store La Bomboniera, one of the most ancient in Italy, established by the Eppingers; it still produces some typical Jewish sweets;
>> the Carciotti palace, in front of the sea, one of the highest examples of neoclassic architecture in Trieste;
>> the Hierschel palace, large neoclassic building overlooking the Sant’Antonio channel;
>> the Antique Bookshop Umberto Saba, in via San Nicolò 30, bought by the poet after the I World War.
